Have you ever applied for a credit card for a juicy sign-up bonus, only to later notice an even higher signup bonus on the same card?
It can be frustrating. It’s happened to me before – but luckily, I now know a way to fix the issue.
It’s called signup bonus matching, and many credit card issuers will do it. The rules vary by bank, but the bottom line is that it’s always worth a shot.
What is a Signup Bonus Match?
A signup bonus match is when a credit card issuer agrees to give you bonus points if you apply for a card and later see the same card advertised with a higher signup bonus.
For example – let’s say you apply for the Citi AAdvantage Platinum card, with a signup bonus of 50,000 American Airlines miles. Three weeks later, you see an ad on Facebook for the same card, with a 60,000 AA mile signup bonus. In this case, if you contact Citi, they will likely match you to that higher offer, adding a bonus 10,000 points once you complete the spending requirements.
Credit Card Bonus Matching Policies – By Bank
Each issuer/bank has different rules and policies regarding credit card bonus matching. Most of these rules are not published anywhere, so all we can do is go off datapoints from the community and anecdotal reports. Check below for some policies of the biggest banks:
Typically does not match higher signup bonuses on credit cards. However, they will sometimes offer some courtesy points if you call in – so it’s worth a shot. You’ll need to call in to speak with an Amex rep about a signup bonus match. Since you can only get the signup bonus on each Amex card once, it’s important to wait for the best offer.
Chase will match higher signup bonuses, so long as they are from public offers and as long as it’s within 90 days of when you applied for the card. They will not match a targeted offer, such as a mailer sent to a specific individual. You can contact Chase by secure message, which is basically an email system built into the online banking platform – or you can call in.
Citi will usually offer signup bonus matching, so long as it’s within 90 days of your application date. In some cases, Citi will actually match targeted offers as well. The best way to do this is a secured message through your online login.
Bank of America
BoA will sometimes match a bonus offer, although we don’t have firm datapoints on their rules. It’s worth a shot.
Capital One does not match signup bonuses

Tips & Tricks
- Secure Message/chat if possible – if that doesn’t work, call in
- If you don’t have success on a phone call, you can hang up and try again
- Be polite and courteous
- If you are denied by a bank that usually matches, it may be worthwhile to ask nicely to speak to a supervisor
- Ask for a match as soon as you hear of a better offer – don’t wait too long
- You can ask for a match even before you’ve reached the spending requirement
