American Express Activate Card 2026

American Express cards arrive inactive. Activate at americanexpress.com/activate, in the Amex app, or by phone using the number on your card. You need the 15-digit Amex account number and 4-digit CID on the front. Replacement cards may direct you to ConfirmCard instead — follow the mailer, not a generic activate link.

Standard activation flow

1. Open americanexpress.com/activate or the Amex app.
2. Enter 15-digit card number and CID.
3. Verify with one-time passcode or online login.
4. Wait for confirmation email or app notification.
5. For Gold/Platinum, open Benefits to enroll credits (Uber, dining, hotel) — not automatic.

ConfirmCard vs Activate

ConfirmCard is used when Amex reissues plastic on an existing account — you acknowledge receipt. Brand-new accounts use Activate. Using the wrong flow wastes time but usually redirects you; read the sticker on the card.

Corporate and small business cards

Corporate programs may route activation through your company admin portal. Small business Gold/Platinum generally use consumer-style activate with business login credentials.

Before first spend

• Metal cards may ship separately from welcome materials — virtual numbers may work earlier if your product includes them.
• Adding to mobile wallet can require activation plus one physical chip read.
• International first purchase may need fraud department verification — call if declined.

Enrolling benefits after activation

Gold and Platinum cards require separate enrollment for monthly credits (dining, Uber, hotel, etc.) in the Benefits tab. Activation alone does not start credit clocks. Set calendar reminders to use credits before month-end expiration.

Metal cards and shipping delays

Metal Amex cards sometimes ship separately from welcome packets. If tracking shows delivered but you have no card, check with household members and building mail rooms before requesting replacement — replacement triggers a new activation on new plastic.

Welcome email and instant access

Read the welcome email immediately — it may contain a temporary password or mobile app deep link. Some products allow adding a virtual card to wallet before metal arrives; terms vary by card. If welcome email promises instant number but app does not show it, activation of physical card may still be required first.

Documenting activation for your records

Screenshot the confirmation screen or save the activation email. If customer service later claims the card was never activated, you have proof. Note the date and time — useful when disputing unauthorized charges that occurred before you received the card (mail theft scenario).

Update billing addresses on subscriptions that still charge your old expired card before they fail — activation of new card does not automatically update Netflix, utilities, or insurance billing profiles.
